The first year that I was aboard the Exploit, there were four of the recently decommissioned 'D' boats (Dash, Detector, Direct, and Dominant), the ones with two huge GM diesels instead of four Packards or Waukesha's, still sitting at the MINEGRU TWO piers in Charleston. The story was that they were reliable and well-liked engines, but shortly after they were overhauled, General Motors announced that they would no longer support them, and the MSOs were quickly decommissioned.
